چکیده

Background: The plant Gmelina arborea has been traditionally used in India for several medicinal purposes like anthelmintic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antidiabetic. Aims: The aim of the present study is to explore the anthelmintic and antidiabetic activities of G. arborea bark extracts using ethanol, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and petroleum ether as solvents. Material and methods: The extracts were screened for phytochemical constituents and evaluated for their toxicity. The anthelmintic activity was evaluated on adult Indian earthworms, Pheretima posthuma. The antidiabatic activity of above extracts was evaluated in alloxan induced diabetic model of Wistar rats. Statistical analysis used: All data are verified for statistically significant by using one way ANOVA at 1 % level of significance (p < 0.01). Results and discussion: The tests for cardiac glycosides and steroids were positive for all the extracts. The ethanol and n-butanol extracts were containing most phytochemicals where as ethyl acetate extracts was containing least number of phytochemicals. All extracts were found to be non toxic to the living body. All extracts were able to show anthelmintic activity at 10 mg/ml concentration and well are comparable with the standard drugs such as piperazine citrate and albendazole. Among all the solvent extracts the n-butanol extract showed better anthelmintic activity even in comparison with both the standard drugs. All the extracts were able to reduce sugar level in blood. Ethanol extract was found to have good antidiabetic activity in comparison to other extracts. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the bark extracts of G. arborea possess anthelmintic and antidiabetic activities.

Intra-CA1 administration of FK-506 (tacrolimus) in rat impairs learning and memory in an inhibitory avoidance paradigm

Objective(s): Calcineurin (CN) is a main phosphatase and a critical regulator of cellular pathways for learning, memory, and plasticity. The FK-506 (tacrolimus),a phosphatase inhibitor, is a fungal-derived agent and a common immune suppressant extensively used for tissue transplantation. To further clarify the role of CN in different stages oflearning and memory the main aim of this study was t...

Mechanisms of FK 506-induced hypertension in the rat.

-Tacrolimus (FK 506) is a powerful, widely used immunosuppressant. The clinical utility of FK 506 is complicated by substantial hypertension and nephrotoxicity. To clarify the mechanisms of FK 506-induced hypertension, we studied the chronic effects of FK 506 on the synthesis of endothelin-1 (ET-1), the expression of mRNA of ET-1 and endothelin-converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1), the endothelial nitri...

Effect of short and long term intake of traditional aphrodisiac Cantharis Q on liver of male albino rat

Cantharis Q has a long history in both folk and traditional medicine being used as an aphrodisiac. It is a crude alcoholic extract of blister beetle Lytta vesicatoria commonly known as Spanish fly having cantharidin, a venomous substance present in it. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical application of Cantharis Q by assessing its effect on the vital organ, liver, for a ...

FK 506 pre-treatment is associated with reduced levels of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6 following hepatic ischemia/reperfusion.

Using a rat model, the effect of pre-treatment with FK 506 on hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury was investigated. All control animals died within 72 h of the ischemia/reperfusion injury. Pre-treatment of the animals with FK 506 (0.3 mg/kg in 0.5 ml saline) administered intravenously improved survival. The most striking protection against fatal ischemia/reperfusion injury was achieved in rats ...
